New research shows athletes believe strongly in efficacy of sports massage. The subject pool consisted of 745 athletes who completed a running race and were within 60 minutes of race completion. Study participants filled out a survey that asked questions about their race-running habits, prior use of massage and belief in the benefits of massage therapy, specifically regarding muscle recovery after the race.
Among the results:
Mike Hovi, an instructor at Soma, gives his opinion on athletes and sports massage. ‘More athletes are seeking massage therapists with a clinical background because of psychological and physiological reasons. Psychologically, if the athlete believes they will benefit from sports massage research says they will. However, from a physiological standpoint, research conducted at McMaster University showed deep tissue massaged after an intense workout caused muscles to enlarge and grow. New mitochondria, the cells “Power House”, convert nutrients into useful cellular energy. Give the cells additive energy and the athlete should be able to perform better.’
